FREE ALCOHOL & DRUG ADDICTION SELF-TREATMENT
AND NON 12-STEP ALTERNATIVE RECOVERY PROGRAMS!
EFFECTIVE-Drug-Free/Responsible Choice/Self-Change/Moderation Modeled Programs:
(behavioral choice(18), brief didactic(35), faith/bible(36), interviewing(00) life process(37), moderation(38), self-change(39), stages of change(40))
Defines addiction as learned behavior (habitual choices) that addicts themselves take responsibility for and learn to correct. Recovery
by choice is taking personal responsibility for your alcohol/drug use and developing the life skills required to defeat your addiction.
Choice based recovery is accepting the consequences & making the decision it's time to quit. It's how the majority(29) of alcoholics
and addicts fully recovered without(72) using treatment, prescription drugs(86), or attendance in 12-step recovery groups. After billions
of dollars and over 50 years of scientific research(43), we now know addiction is NOT(42) and never was caused by a disease(24). People
don't decide to quit epilepsy, AIDS, diabetes, or any REAL disease like nearly all recovered(31) alcoholics/addicts did on their own(16)
with alcohol and drug addiction. Choice based recovery programs include motivational interventions, moderation/harm reduction, and
all programs that educate addicts in responsible choice, self-change, self-empowerment, and addicts ability to control their behavior.
INEFFECTIVE-Coerced/Incurable Disease/12-Step/Standard Treatment Modeled Programs:
(AA(45), biological(46), disease concept of treatment(47), genetic(48), involuntary disability(49), loss of control(50)(51)(26)(27),prescription drugs(94))
Defines addiction as an incurable biological disease that requires medical treatment, prescription drugs(52), & lifetime dependence on
12-step recovery groups to achieve & maintain sobriety. Recovery by disease is a life-long process that NEVER ENDS(28) in ever being
fully recovered (get well), but instead ends with death. Addicts who claim they are suffering from a disease are denying the fact their
drug use and abuse was their own choice. Statistics(28) show very few people succeed(6) long-term(53) believing they were victims of a
chronic incurable brain disease. Diseased(22) treatment may reduce(19) your chance at recovering: 7%-15%(55) will deteriorate during or
shorty after(54) taking prescribed drugs, peer victimization, and acceptance of a hopeless life-long disease, while others experienced
deadly learned(56) self-fulfilling prophecies. Disease based recovery programs include 12-step treatment, conventional treatment, &
programs that use group peer pressure, powerlessness, dependence on prescription drugs, and an irresponsible no fault disease.
Alcohol Addiction Treatment Effectiveness
University of New Mexico researchers led by psychologist William R. Miller(80) have conducted a meta-analysis (a method for
combining the results of many clinical trials) of 532 alcohol treatment trials(8). Miller then summed the results, weighting each in terms
of the methodological rigor with which it was conducted, to assign a value they called the “Cumulative Evidence Score” (CES) for rating
the effectiveness of various alcohol treatments. Negative scores indicate that a treatment(78) fared far worse than other treatments(57) or
receiving no treatment. Those promoting drugs, diseases, and 12-step religion are very aware of the harm they're causing to addicts.

"The negative correlation between scientific evidence and application in standard practice remains striking, and could hardly be larger
if one intentionally constructed treatment programs from those approaches with the least evidence of efficacy." William R. Miller PhD(81)
"In the case of alcoholism, our whole treatment system, with its innumerable therapies, armies of therapists, large and expensive
programs, endless conferences and public relations activities is founded on hunch, not evidence, and not science...Our programs
(disease/12-step/drug) are frequently useless and wasteful and sometimes dangerous." Enoch Gordis PhD-Former director NIAAA(87)
"The idea of a single disease obscures the scientific consensus that no single cause has ever been established, nor has any
biological causal factor ever been shown to be decisive...Both independent and government research shows expensive disease-
oriented treatment programs(12-step/drug) to be largely a waste of money and human resources." Herbert Fingarette PhD(24)(#3b)
"Not one study(10) has found AA(11) or its derivatives(6) to be superior to any other approach, or even to be better than not receiving any
help at all for eliminating alcoholism...Those entering alcoholism treatment(disease/12-step/drug) actually fare worse(19)(55)(54)(22)(21)(93)
than untreated alcoholics." Stanton Peele PhD(74)(#4b)
“Addiction treatment is a scam...Addiction is not a disease and therefore cannot be medically ‘treated’...There is currently no 'treatment'
(disease/12-step/drug) for addiction that has been proven effective.” Jeffrey Schaler PhD(83)(82)
"It may be easier for improper treatment to retard recovery than for proper treatment to hasten it." George E. Vaillant PhD(84)
"If society accepts the idea addicts 'can't help themselves' are 'sick' have a 'disease' and 'not responsible', then we should not hold
responsible or punish those who commit crimes as a result of addiction." William Wilbanks PhD(56)
*As with all studies conducted on the effectiveness of a treatment for a 'medical disease' there requires a control group or placebo.
Any study that does not utilize a control group or placebo is regarded as being purely unscientific.
Are COERCED 12-Step Treatment Programs Saving Lives Or Just Pushing Drugs And Creating Victims?
TAKE ACTION IN YOUR COMMUNITY TODAY AND PETITION A STATE LAW MANDATING AN INDEPENDENT 2-YEAR FOLLOW-UP*
ON EVERYONE SUBJECTED TO A DISEASE BASED TREATMENT PROGRAM. WHEN OVER 70% OF ADDICTS ARE FOUND STILL
USING ALCOHOL OR DRUGS, ALL FUNDING FOR THAT PROGRAM SHOULD BE STOPPED AND THAT PROGRAM SHUT DOWN
IMMEDIATELY. ANY PROGRAM PRODUCING LESS THAN A 30% SOBRIETY RATE FALLS BELOW NATURAL IMPROVEMENT
(spontaneous remission) AND EVIDENCE THEIR PROGRAM IS HURTING ADDICTS. TREATMENT PROVIDERS MUST BE HELD
ACCOUNTABLE & BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE VERIFIABLE SOBRIETY RATES IN ADDICTS WHO COMPLETED THEIR PROGRAM.
ADDICTS DESERVE A CHOICE IN AN EFFECTIVE DRUG-FREE TREATMENT PROGRAM THAT REALLY WORKS!
-Please help us give addicts a choice in effective alternative treatments and sign Our Petition.
-Searching for a truly helpful residential treatment program for yourself or a loved one that REALLY WORKS visit the Baldwin Research
Institute Saint Jude Country Retreat AND Stanton Peele PhD St. Gregory Retreat Center. Both programs are choice based programs.
-The Baldwin Research Institute Saint Jude County Retreat is the ONLY addiction treatment provider with enough confidence and pride
in their program they eagerly conduct and publicly publish independently verified sobriety rates. No other provider comes close to the
dedication and commitment to helping addicts overcome their addictions. Choice programs discourage more drug use.
*2-year time period starts at completion of probation. Drug-free during 1-year prior to follow-up is considered a success. This allows
365 days for their client's 'disease' to cause a 'relapse' before they maintain permanent sobriety. It's time to find out just how costly the
disease concept is to taxpayers and addicts wellbeing. How can an addict feel good about themselves believing they have a disease?
-Relapse is a decision made and evidence of an ineffective treatment program-NOT a symptom of a strange brain disease. Statistically
75%-90% of alcoholics will relapse into alcoholic behavior within the first year following release from 12-step residential treatment.
FAILING 12-Step Treatment Is ILLEGALLY Denying Addicts Access To Effective Drug-Free Alternatives
Every year 1,000,000's of Americans (dependent or not) are forced in 12-step treatment programs that have been proven time and time
again to CAUSE MORE HARM THAN GOOD. While 12-step advocates are profiting off addicts failure in treatment and using our court
systems to coerce people into their drug pushing disease programs, we as taxpayers play along & encourage the corruption with even
more funding. By law people have the right to refuse 12-step treatment & they have the right to know the alternatives available to them.
Forcing people into these programs that push drugs does not help addicts get off drugs. Providers parade their best stars up front &
use them to mislead the public into believing these programs are working when in fact they have been PROVEN TO NOT TO WORK.
-Denying addicts informed consent sets county and state governments up for unnecessary lawsuits.
10 Questions On Whether Disease Based Treatment Programs Are 'Dangerous'
1-How Many Addicts are Attending 12-Step Treatment For The Third, Fourth, Fifth, Or Sixth Time?
2-How Many Drunk Drivers killed Someone After Completion Of A Tax Funded Treatment Program?
3-How Many Alcoholics Committed Suicide After Completion Of A Disease/Drug Based Treatment Program?
4-How Many Addicts Have Been Emotionally Abused In Group Treatment Through Unproven Therapy Practices?
5-How Many Alcoholic's Lives Have Been Destroyed & Families Torn Apart By Those Promoting Sickness For Profit?
6-How Many Addicts Are Now Addicted To Prescription Drugs After Completion Of A Disease Based Treatment Program?
7-How Many Alcoholics Are Now Drinking Greater Amounts Of Alcohol Due To The Pessimistic Beliefs They Were Taught & The
Unfavorable Experiences They Had While Taking Prescribed Drugs In A Drug Promoting Diseased Based Treatment Program?
8-How Many Addicts Has 12-Step Treatment Stopped From Achieving A Full Recovery Because They Believed They Would Never
Fully Recover(Get Well) From An Unproven Chronic Incurable Progressive Biological Brain Disease?
9-How Many Alcoholics Are Now Dieing From Cirrhosis Of The Liver (A Real Disease) Because They Believed They Suffered From
An INVOLUNTARY Brain Disease That Forced Them To Drink Irresponsibly And NOT Their Learned Pleasurable Desire To Get High?
10-How Many Alcoholics Are Now Dead Because They Believed It Was 'Impossible To Quit Without AA/12-Step Treatment' And All
Without A Single Biological Test To Determine If The Diagnosis Is In Fact A Real Disease. No Biological Test=Not Listed In Pathology.
Top 10 Reasons We Should NEVER Call Addiction An 'INCURABLE DISEASE'
1-It sets the alcoholic and addict up for pure failure.
2-It stigmatizes alcohol and drug dependent people for life.
3-It shifts the responsibility from alcoholics/addicts to taxpayers.
4-It presents the alcoholic/addict as a victim or someone to emulate(56).
5-It leads the alcoholic/addict to believe they can't recover on their own.
6-It traps the alcoholic/addict in a world inhabited by fellow disease sufferers.
7-It brutalizes and brainwashes the young and those who aren't truly addicted.
8-It excludes all other approaches, many of which have been proven far more successful.
9-It ignores the rest of the alcoholics/addicts problems in favor of blaming them all on the disease.
10-It promotes drugs, false beliefs, inappropriate attitudes, as well as harmful, wasteful, and ineffective social policies.
-How can those promoting an incurable disease possibly say they're helping people with such a harmful and destructive belief?
Top 10 Reasons Addiction Is NOT A 'Treatable' Involuntary Incurable Progressive Brain DISEASE
1-Alcoholics don't always lose control of themselves whenever they are exposed to the object of their addiction(50)(51)(27)(26)
2-All medical treatments for alcoholism have consistently been proven ineffective(22)(23). Alcoholics are three times as likely
to succeed long-term without medical treatment(31).Treatment actually hinders the normal natural recovery process(19)(28)
3-Alcoholism usually does not last a lifetime. Alcoholics almost always mature out of addiction: With dependency being
highest in mid-twenties then dropping sharply in late-thirties and reaching as low as 1% in the early sixties(62)(63)(71)(88)
4-No biological or genetic mechanisms have ever been clearly identified that account for addictive behavior(48)(64)(65)
5-No scientific research suggests or supports the hypothesis that neurobiological factors initiate volition(66)(43)(00)
6-Chronic alcoholics can moderate their drinking, while others returned to drinking responsibly(67)(68)(71)(76)(50)(90)
7-The majority of the offspring of chronic alcoholics do not become alcoholics themselves(69)(70)
8-The alcoholic brain rapidly heals itself and returns to normal upon abstinence(14)(46)
9-No research disputes that alcoholism takes a great deal of time to develop(book)
10-Everyone has the God given gift of free will and moral choice(73)

Top 7 Reasons Addiction Is A CHOICE
1-All alcoholics and addicts who quit drinking or using made a choice to change their behavior and/or dependencies.
2-The majority of addicts placed on probation chose to control their drug use to avoid jail time-Court-ordered UA's(79)
3-Alcoholics will choose to drink to achieve a desired state of intoxication-learned behavior from past experience(26)
4-Alcoholics who didn't know they were consuming alcohol chose to drink the same amount as non-alcoholics(51)
5-It's impossible to get intoxicated without making a conscious choice to take a drink and/or use drugs(2)
6-Alcoholics plan, organize, generate income, and make choices before & during a drinking binge(27)
7-Alcoholics plan and will choose to stop taking anti-abuse days before a drinking binge(77)
Top 7 Reasons To Encourage 'Brief Motivational Interventions'(58)(59)
1-No attendance in recovery groups or expensive treatment programs.
2-Allows alcoholics/addicts to create and work their own plan for sobriety.
3-Places all the responsibility for alcohol/drug use and abuse on the addict.
4-Educates addicts in moderation/harm reduction and does not label people.
5-Proven to be more effective than expensive inpatient/outpatient treatment programs(60)(8)
6-Evidence that the course of harmful alcohol/drug use and abuse can be effectively altered.
7-Highly cost effective in reducing alcohol and drug addiction problems within our communities
Top 7 Themes That Motivate & Drive Self-Recovery (From Studies On Natural Recovery)
1-The perception of an impending/existing severe & incapacitating loss-high anxiety produced by persistent fears.
2-The strong desire to take charge of one's life-feelings of empowerment over one's behavior/environment(28)
3-A history of less frequent drug use and lower frequencies of intoxication.
4-A stable family life & determination to be a role model for one's children.
5-Lower levels of avoidant coping and having higher self-esteem(16)
6-A greater satisfaction in work and occupational employment.
7-The power of prayer and promise.
Studies on natural recovery have revealed that alcoholics who viewed their addiction simply as bad choices they had the power to
change resulted in successful recoveries. This is in direct opposition to programs that promote powerlessness, prescription drug use,
and a life-long incurable brain disease.
7 Steps To Helping An Addict Without Treatment
1-If you are enabling the addict in any way-stop immediately.
2-Let the addict make their own choices and plan their own recovery.
3-Keep the addict constantly physically and mentally active and productive.
4-Provide the addict with opportunities to develop self-esteem and self-respect.
5-Educate the addict in the physical, moral, and social consequences of their drug use.
6-Teach the addict drug addiction is choices made daily-never an involuntary incurable disease.
7-Help the addict find new avenues to self-efficacy and sustaining social networks that are rewarding.
- Golden Rule: You Can Never Help Someone Who Refuses to Help Themselves!
7 Steps For A Choice Based Self-Recovery
1-Understand you have a choice to continue using and you have the choice to quit using. -You
have the power of choice. The choice to quit is always an option every time you decide to use.
2-Distance yourself from other alcoholics and addicts. -Avoid all bad influences and situations.
3-Learn and accept the consequences (effects) your drug addiction is having on you and others.
4-Keep your mind and body active in helping others, learning, achieving, and productive activities.
5-Take full and complete responsibility for your behavior, choices, and your alcohol/drug addiction.
6-Find a great God loving role model-One who has never had a problem with alcohol and/or drugs.
7-Attend a Christian church, study the bible, pray daily, and seek a close relationship with Jesus Christ.
-Trust in God-Accept the Consequences-Find Better Friendships-Take Charge of Your Life!
7 Steps For A Faith/Bible Based Self-Recovery(bible)
1-Acknowledge your condition as an addicted sinner. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
2-Understand the penalty for continuing in your sinful addiction is death. "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our lord." Romans 6:23
3-Understand you can do nothing to work off the debt you have acquired through your addictive lifestyle. "Not by works of righteousness
which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost." Titus 3:5
4-Realize that Christ died for you to pay your sinful addiction debt. "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we
might be made the righteousness of God in him." 2 Corinthians 5:21
5-Believe that Christ died, was buried, and rose from the dead. "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." Romans 10:9
6-Understand that salvation is a free gift, apart from any works that you do. "For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of
yourselves: It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9
7-Understand the moment you trust Christ, you have salvation and are freed from the bondage of addiction. "Knowing this, that our old
man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed
from sin." Romans 6:6-7
For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags...Who
hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? Who hath babbling? Who hath wounds without
cause? Who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

AA/12-Step Treatment V.s No Treatment:
77% recovered without groups or treatment
21% recovered on wait list and no treatment
-0.25% recovered in Alcoholics Anonymous*
-06% recovered in disease/12-step treatment*
When you contact a treatment center they will always claim a success rate
and often a remarkably high one. These are not scientifically valid data.
These numbers are generated from information collected in a variety of
ways by the providers themselves and lack any scientific rigor.* Or, if they
claim they had used an independent firm, ask what question(s) were used
(program completion, criminal behaviour, reduced consequences, etc) and
length of follow-up. Most providers survey their clients during or shortly after
leaving treatment and very few consider sobriety. The goal of an alcohol &
drug addiction treatment program. Providers reject programs that work.
Life Process Model
1-Addiction is a way of coping with yourself and your world.
2-The solution requires self-awareness, new coping skills, and
changing your environment.
3-Addiction is a continuum; your behavior is more or less addicted.
4-People can outgrow addiction problems.
5-You should identify problems & solutions in ways that work for you.
6-Those without an addiction problem are the best models.
7-Addiction stems from other life problems you have.
8-You should associate with a normal range of people.
9-Getting better is not a matter of believing a dogma.
10-You learn to develop your own power or seek power from Jesus
Christ to get off drugs.
Disease/12-Step/Drug Model
1-Addiction is inbred and biological.
2-The solution is medical treatment(drugs) & membership
in religious groups such as AA.
3-Addiction is all-or-nothing: you are or you aren't an addict.
4-Addiction is permanent & you can relapse at any moment.
5-Addicts are in denial and must be forced to acknowledge
they have a disease.
6-The recovering addict/alcoholic is an expert on addiction.
7-Addiction is a primary disease.
8-Your main associates must be other recovering addicts.
9-You must accept the disease philosophy to recover.
10-Surrendering to any higher power is the key to recovery.
Addiction: A Medical Disease
1-A means to fund a harmful/failing
taxpayer funded treatment program.
2-A quick and legal way to promote the
usage and selling of prescription drugs.
3-Treatment providers irresponsible
defense for failure to produce sobriety.

The cost of providing this FREE Public service for addicts is expensive. Most of the scientific studies we review and/or collect valuable self-help/self-recovery information from
costs us between $8.00 to $32.00 per study. Internet, web hosting, and various other services that are required to operate and maintain this site run over $100 per month.
We are self-supporting and not dependent on State or Federal government handouts, pharmaceutical drug companies, or the hard working taxpayer. We strongly believe it is
the alcoholic or addicts' sole responsibility to make the required behavioral changes for sobriety and they should never expect others to pay for their treatment or POOR choices.
We offer this website as a means to help those with addiction problems WITHOUT funding provided through the use of taxpayers money, especially now during America's
economic crises. U.S. taxpayers waste more than $80 Billion on FAILING mental health/addiction treatment services every year in the United States. Any and all information
contain on this website may be copied, reprinted, or reproduced for the purpose of helping addicts and educating others. The only exception is the studies that are contained
on this website are for viewing purposes only and must have written permission from their rightful owners to be reproduced. Contact us or get permission from the rightful
owner listed on the top of each study. All the opinions contained on this website are ours and in no way reflect those of the financial supporters of this website. All material
provided on the Defeat Addictions website is provided for informational or educational purposes only. We cannot provide individual clinical or therapy recommendations for
persons consulting this site. Consult a licensed therapist or physician regarding the applicability of any opinions or recommendations with respect to your problems or medical
condition. Defeat Addictions Inc. is not responsible for your sobriety or failure to achieve sobriety. Sobriety and any help from others you expect to PAY FOR is your responsibility.
This FREE non 12-step alternative recovery website is dedicated in memory of all addicts who died believing they had an INCURABLE DISEASE.
IF YOU DECIDE YOU REALLY WANT IT! YOU WILL ACHIEVE LONG-TERM SOBRIETY
