A Family Guide To Keeping Youth Mentally Healthy & Drug Free is a public education Web site developed by the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to communicate to parents and other caring
adults about how they can help promote their child's mental health and reduce his or her risk for becoming involved
with alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs.

Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free
Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free, a unique coalition of Governors' spouses, Federal agencies, and public
and private organizations, is an initiative to prevent the use of alcohol by children ages 9 to 15. It is the only national
effort that focuses on alcohol use in this age group.

Learn Well
Learn Well is a lean and flexible group of highly trained and experienced professionals that readily respond to
needs without involving expensive logistical support. Nearly all its funds are used for the direct help for the
underserved.

Marin Institute-Alcohol Industry Watchdog

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
We're dads and daughters, sons and uncles, friends and neighbors. And mothers. We're all ages and from all walks
of life. We are many colors with one voice. MADD is not a crusade against alcohol consumption - MADD's mission is
to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.

National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC)
The National Crime Prevention Council’s mission is to be the nation's leader in helping people keep themselves,
their families, and their communities safe from crime. To achieve this, NCPC produces tools that communities can
use to learn crime prevention strategies, engage community members, and coordinate with local agencies.

National Families in Action was founded in Atlanta, Georgia in 1977. Its mission is to help families and communities

reminds our country of its obligations to children and provides parents and families with a powerful voice to speak on

Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)
The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) provides national leadership, coordination, and
resources to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency and victimization. OJJDP supports states and communities
in their efforts to develop and implement effective and coordinated prevention and intervention programs and to
improve the juvenile justice system so that it protects public safety, holds offenders accountable, and provides
treatment and rehabilitative services tailored to the needs of juveniles and their families.

Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP)

OJJDP, a component of the Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice, accomplishes its mission by
supporting states, local communities, and tribal jurisdictions in their efforts to develop and implement effective

hold offenders accountable, and provide services that address the needs of youth and their families.

Parents-The Anti Drug
TheAntiDrug.com was created by the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign to equip parents and other adult
caregivers with the tools they need to raise drug-free kids. Working with the nation's leading experts in the fields of
parenting and substance abuse prevention, TheAntiDrug.com serves as a drug prevention information center, and
a supportive community for parents to interact and learn from each other.

Partnership for a Drug Free America (PDFA)

Pride Youth Programs
PRIDE Youth Programs is the nation’s oldest and largest peer-to-peer organization devoted to drug abuse and
violence prevention through education. Each year PRIDE organizes, implements, and hosts the world’s largest youth
drug and violence prevention conference. Using the vehicles of public speaking, drama, dance and song, PRIDE
Youth Teams offer programs for students in kindergarten through college.

Safety First
Safety First, a project of the Drug Policy Alliance, provides resources for parents, educators and students who are
interested in reality-based approaches to drug education that stress the health, safety and well-being of young
people.

Strengthening American Families is pleased to provide the results of the 1999 search for "best practice" family
strengthening programs. In the following pages you will find two page summaries of family-focused programs which
have been proven to be effective.

Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)
To provide students with the best prevention and intervention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage
drinking, other drug use, impaired driving and other destructive decisions.

The Century Counci
The Century Council is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking.
Headquartered in Washington, D.C. and Chaired by Susan Molinari, The Council develops and implements
innovative programs and public awareness campaigns and promotes action through strategic partnerships. The
Century Council promotes responsible decision-making regarding drinking or non-drinking of beverage alcohol and
discourages all forms of irresponsible consumption through education, communications, research, law enforcement,
and other programs.

The Cool Spot
The Cool Spot was created for kids 11-13 years old by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
(NIAAA). The NIAAA is the lead U.S. agency supporting research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of
alcohol problems. It is a component of the National Institutes of Health, within the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services.

The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and other drug abuse
The Higher Education Center's purpose is to help college and community leaders develop, implement, and evaluate
programs and policies to reduce student problems related to alcohol and other drug use and interpersonal violence.
The Center favors a comprehensive approach to prevention. Central to this approach is a mix of environmental
management strategies to address the institutional, community, and public policy factors that contribute to these
problems.

Too Smart To Start
Too Smart To Start is a public education initiative sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA) to provide research-based strategies and materials to professionals and volunteers at the
community level to help them conduct an underage alcohol use prevention program. The materials are designed to
educate 9- to 13-year-olds about the harms of alcohol use and to support parents and caregivers as they
participate in their children’s activities.

Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center
The Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center was established by the Office of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention (within the U.S. Department of Justice) to support its Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws
Program. The Vision of the Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center is to create healthier and safer
environments in which States, local communities, and Federal entities engage in environmental prevention and
enforcement practices that proactively and effectively limit youth access to alcohol and significantly reduce harmful
consequences associated with alcohol use by underage youth.

Youth in Action
Instead of targeting high school students with a message, Youth In Action looks at the whole environment that
seems to condone underage drinking. From the store clerk who doesn't check IDs, to the police officer who might
pour out the beer and send teens home, to the adults who don't mind buying beer for a kid who slips him an extra
$10 -- YIA teams look for community solutions instead of focusing their attention on their peers. Teams focus on
laws and policies that affect people's behavior, because that's the best place to make changes.

Youth Service America (YSA)
Youth Service America is a resource center that partners with thousands of organizations committed to increasing
the quality and quantity of volunteer opportunities for young people, ages 5-25, to serve locally, nationally, and
globally.

TooYoungToDrink.com is a website sponsored by the Alliance Against Underage Drinking to promote public
